Growing Hydroponics – A Hobby

A Hobby is about utilizing leisure time to do something creative. Some have the passion to write, others to do photography and yet others to do gardening, depending on their interest. In the US and the European countries people are attaching more and more importance to growing hydroponics in lieu of conventional gardening. Hydroponics gardening has progressed substantially in recent years and it has spread on such a big scale that people of all age groups find it an interesting and creative way to pass  leisure time.

Requirements of Plants

The requirements of a plant in both the soil less gardening and the conventional gardening are the same; the only difference lies in the supplying of nutrients. In hydroponics gardening, the nutrients are given directly to the roots through nutrient enriched solution. If, however, you decide to take up hydroponics gardening as a hobby then you must have in-depth information of the following things:

Knowledge of amount of light and range of temperature – For a specific variety of crop and plant, a certain range of temperature needs to be maintained round the clock. Scientific research has confirmed that temperature between 60 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit helps in optimal growth of summer crops, while 50 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit is good for winter crops. Similarly, plants need a certain amount of light to prepare their food, where indoor plants are concerned they do not get much exposure to the sunlight hence, artificial lights are used to fulfill their requirements.

Supply of Carbon dioxide and Nutrients – Carbon Dioxide is the main component that a plant needs to make its food. In conventional gardening the environment provides carbon dioxide but indoor plants depend upon extractor fans. Plants also need minerals and other elements for optimal growth, which are given in the form of fertilizers. Hydroponics gardening depends upon supplying of nutrients through a nutrient solution.

Use of Plastic Products – For a hobbyist, taking care of everything, from checking of pH value to spraying at the right time, is mandatory. Use of metal hydroponics equipments sometimes lead to  irreparable damages such as the change in the pH value of Nutrient Solutions, which adversely affects the growth of a plant. Scientists and experienced persons always recommend periodical replacement of metal equipments or use of plastic equipments, as they are non-reactive and longer lasting.

Prevention Against Diseases – With the change of seasons, new kinds of diseases spread in a crop. Actually, the germs and pests that damage crops get a favorable breeding condition and as a result they multiply very fast. Hydroponically grown plants mainly suffer from water related diseases hence; close observation is necessary to prevent rapid spread of diseases.

More and more people around the world are choosing hydroponics as a hobby because it has given rise to a new trend that is of decorating a house with indoor plants.
